I don’t need to get stronger….. Blasphemy!

Back in my Triathlon Days.

——–

I’m in the early stages of planning my next year of training. I’m looking at what I’m good at, what I’m bad at, and what I need to work on the most. Here’s the background:

1. Crossfit is my sport

2. I think I want to compete in my sport over the next year

Keeping those two facts in mind, I don’t thing I NEED to get stronger. Huh? Did he just say he doesn’t need to get stronger?

Doesn’t everybody need to get stronger?

Would I like to snatch 260? Yup.

Would I like to clean and jerk 340? Yup. Sounds awesome.

Deadlift 550? Sure, why not.

I have this conversation with Aaron PCF all the time.

Jon: I think it’d be nice to have a 1200 Crossfit total. I think I’m going to do Wendler 5-3-1 and drink a gallon of milk a day.

Aaron: No you’re not

Jon: Why not? I need to get stronger.

Aaron: No you don’t.. Dude, you are a Crossfitter, not a power lifter. Crossfit is your sport. You are already stronger than 90% of the people you compete against.

Jon: So you are saying that to get better at Crossfit, I need to actually…..DO…..Crossfit?

Aaron: Yea. Now go for a run, fatty.

For those of you with an eye on competing in Crossfit:

You are not a crosscountry runner, powerlifter, strongman, RKC, Olympic lifter, sprinter, gymnast , bodybuilder, or rower.

You’re a Crossfitter.

***I’m not trying to denigrate any of the sports listed above. If you want to quit Crossfit, and become a full time Olympic lifter for a couple years, I’m all for it. Just don’t be surprised when you get your ass handed to you when a 5K run comes out of the hopper. On the same note, if you want to do triathlons, go for it. Just don’t complain to me when you have to do 40 deadlifts at 315.
